The symbolic representation of Europe from the Conservatives' point of view

Résumé

The symbolic representation of Europe from the Conservatives’ point of view “Parliament matters” Norton once wrote. It does indeed, parliamentary debates involve agenda-setting, opinion-building, decision-making affecting the political, social and cultural spheres of the country. The confrontational nature of those debates is the opportunity for parties and leaders to impose their views by persuading the public that their policy on big issues is the most efficient. Europe has been one of those significant issue ; landmark events in the construction of Europe have been passionately and lengthily discussed in Parliament : the Maastricht Treaty, the single currency, the withdrawal from the ERM, Brexit… The way these issues are adressed by the Conservative parliamentary group are undeniably reflective of the party’s euroscepticism. This paper aims at studying how the use of symbols in parliamentary debates contributes to creating a symbolic representation of Europe. For the purpose of this paper I will focus on one type of debate : Question Time. The use of symbols is therefore one of the most effective way to put one’s message across in a most condensed form. They also contribute to conveying an (over)simplified message easy to grab and remember and whose emotional force could never be equated by a rational discourse. I’ll try to identify some of the symbols associated with or standing for Europe. Then in an attempt to determine whether those symbolic representations of Europe have evolved through time I’ll show whether they have been consistently divided along partisan lines (intra and extra party lines)
